Magnetometers are fluxgate induction devices whose output is a function of their orientation with respect to the earth's magnetic field.

The construction is simply a primary or drive coil of wire wrapped around a ferrite core, with a pick up coil of wire wrapped around both the drive coil and core. The output of the pick up coil will vary as a result of the influence from the earth's magnetic field and the magnetometers orientation in the magnetic field.

Magnetometers are used in the calculation of Azimuth and Magnetic Toolface. Errors can occur when the devices are actively reading in the presence of a distorted magnetic field.

Distortion can originate from drill string magnetic interference or from external magnetic interference (fish left in the hold, near by casing, certain formations). The error induced by the distortion is greatest when drilling east/west at high inclination angles.
